The Mine and Quarry Bureau enforces the 1975 Mine Safety and Health Act of North Carolina. The bureau conducts inspections, education and training, technical assistance, consultations, and also helps mine and quarry operators to comply with the provisions of the 1977 Federal Mine Safety and Health Act. Abandoned underground mines are inspected by the bureau to protect the general public. The bureau also promotes rockhound safety and conducts an explosives safety course for anyone handling or using explosives.
The goals of the Mine and Quarry Bureau are to:
- Reduce the number and severity of injuries and illnesses in N.C.’s minerals’industry
- Enhance miner education and training efforts
- Improve staff development and operational processes
- Maintain a safe and healthy work environment
