STATEMENT TO PUBLIC
Effective October 6, 2009, Commissioner of Labor Cherie Berry instituted a gift ban for ALL NCDOL Employees, which extends the ban that was instituted by the N.C. General Assembly in 2007 with the passage of the State Government Ethics Act . The new NCDOL Gift Ban Policy prohibits ALL NCDOL employees from accepting gifts from any persons engaged in activities that are regulated or controlled by NCDOL. The law is complex and sometimes confusing for both the giver and the recipient. Therefore, out of an abundance of caution I/We/the Commissioner must respectfully decline to accept ANY gifts of ANY value as a part of my/our/her participation in this event. The Department apologizes for any inconvenience this may cause, but due to the potential liability to both parties all caution is being taken.
NOTE FOR ALL NCDOL EMPLOYEES
It is important that NCDOL employees err on the side of caution in this area in order to avoid even the appearance of impropriety. Therefore, if you are not
absolutely comfortable with whether it is okay for you to accept a gift (including a meal), please contact the NCDOL Ethics Liaison, Britne Becker, at (919) 715-4291 or britne.becker@labor.nc.gov
